who we are
Samadana/m is a Non Government Centre that is committed to promote Non-Violent Conflict Resolution and Conflict Handling (NVCR).The name "Samadana" and "Samadanam" are words in the Sinhala and Tamil languages respectively that stand for peace or peace giving.

The membership of Samadana/m also called as the Council, is made up volunteers both men and women, who represent different religions, ethnic and social groups and who are committed to the cause of Non-Violence. The programme of work of Samadana/m is carried out by the volunteer members of Samadana/m who have been exposed and undergone several training in NVCR both locally and internationally. Samadana/m is enriched by the experience and expertise of members in their own fields.
the origin
The A group of people who underwent training on Non-Violent Conflict Resolution in the years 1992 and 1993 through the workshops held by Quaker Peace and Services, felt of the need to promote the concept of Non-Violence, as the country was moving, more and more towards a violent culture. In the first few years this group met regularly in an informal manner and talked about Non Violence and its importance. They conducted a facilitators training programme and several NVCR work shops. The increase in the request for more and more NVCR workshops and programmes, the need for greater organisational commitment and the protracted conflict in the country eventually gave birth to Samadana/m in September 1993.
the need
The need for peace can be seen in every dimension of human life, personal, social and between nations.Against the backdrop of violence and war NGOs and community groups struggle to seek alternative ways of resolving conflict.

The conflict situation in Sri Lanka which spans over decades bears testimony for the need to promote a culture of Non-Violence in Sri lanka. The ethnic war and the youth insurrection have taken a heavy toll on property and human life, leaving thousands displaced and traumatised.

Inspite of its crippling effect on the economy and the want on destruction of human life, violence continues to be met with violence. The repeated breakdown of peace talks, has rendered violence to be perceived as a means of achieving peace. Leaders and the community at large seem unconvinced of the liberting and transforming nature of Non-Violence.

The surest path to sustainable peace is the path of Non-Violence. The experience of the ages lays down clear principles and a path of action.
our vision
Is of a society that moves towards justice, equality and a Non-Violent lifestyle through managing its conflicts in a Non-Violent way.

Samadana/m works to achieve a multi-ethnic and peaceful society in which people have the ability, courage and willingness to manage their own conflicts in a Non-Violent way by providing the necessary knowledge skills and creating a safe neutral space for differing parties to discuss their problems. By networking with similar organisations, locally and internationally, Samadana/m will facilitate a process for a people’s movement towards achieving its vision.
